Stop getting in your own way

Sometimes the path we use to try to get unstuck is actually making it worse. First you need to understand why frantically making more effort is keeping you going round in circles.

Understand the science

Funcional freeze is not a mindset issue – it’s a nervous system issue. A dysregulated body can’t pull at its own bootstraps. Instead, you need to understand how to feel safe first, and then work from there.

Self-compassion is key

The key to the process is tapping into self-compassion in a safe and gradual way.
This is a skill that can be learned in therapy and can be continued by anyone and everyone to apply to all aspects of life. 

You feel like you’ve been going round in circles forever, trying to free yourself from ancient patterns of conditioning.

Even after years of regular practice, we can stay stuck like we’re on a merry-go-round. Here are some signs that it might be time to release blocked emotions:

✓ While you’re in your practice, you feel connected and present, but when you return to everyday life, that connection disappears
✓ You can consistently teach others to arrive at a state of peace, but have a hard time abiding there yourself
✓ You are secretly ashamed of certain “unevolved” feelings and behaviors you can’t get rid of
You settle for feeling freedom and peace occasionally when your practice allows it, but most of the time you experience tension
Your hope lies in the possibility that through more of the same, one day you’ll achieve what you seek
You can explain very eloquently why you are suffering, but that intellectual understanding doesn’t make. it go away

My story

I had crippling panic attacks as a teenager. I saw many therapists who dismissed my symptoms or simply helped me go through life feeling anxious
I learned meditation and yoga but also experienced the spiritual bypassing that is rife in meditation circles
I came across more versions of gaslighting than I care to remember

I’ve been there

I know what it’s like to see everyone else meditating quietly while my own mind is racing out of control. I know what it’s like to lose the ability to focus for weeks on end after a particularly triggering situation.​ I know what it feels like to go through life knowing the next panic attack is waiting just around the corner.

My own path began over 20 years ago and involved first and foremost healing myself, which led to the exploration of a vast amount of spiritual and not-so-spiritual practices, with all the resulting trial and error. It took longer than I had envisioned and hurt more than I could ever had imagined, and the result is not that I am finally “healed”… but it’s that I would choose this path again if I had the choice.

Today I choose to share what I learned to transform my pain into a gift for others who need similar healing.
